The group were working at an East Doncaster construction site when the robbery unfolded just after midday.

A masked man, wearing all black, confronted two other men as they hopped into their parked VW Golf on the residential street.

It appears the offender was after a bag the pair were holding.

A confrontation broke out and the man fired several shots in the direction of his victims, before grabbing the bag and fleeing.

The heroic tradies who had been watching on caught up with the armed thief a few hundred metres away and tried to stop him.

Several more shots were fired in their direction.

“A reaction of fear, three of us just ran and jumped the fence … we heard the gunshots and got out of there,” Peter, who was also working on the site, told 9NEWS.

Simone lives nearby and heard the gunshots.

“All of a sudden I just saw a guy running down the street carrying this white briefcase. I’m not sure what it was,” she told 9NEWS.

Police are appealing for information and would like the two victims to come forward as they are yet to make a complaint.

“It’s believed the male was lying in wait for the two male victims… at this stage I would say it is a targeted attack,” Detective Sergeant Leigh Howse said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
