Is RPL right for me?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that recognises the skills and knowledge you’ve built through real work experience. Instead of sitting in a classroom repeating things you already know, you’re assessed on what you can actually do.

If you’ve been working in building and construction, running sites, supervising trades, managing projects or contracts, and you don’t yet hold a formal diploma, building and construction RPL is likely the most practical way to get qualified.

Working in construction but not yet licensed to contract for it?

In most Australian states and territories, the CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) is the key qualification required to apply for a builder’s licence. If getting licensed is your goal, RPL is the fastest way to get the qualification you need without going back to study.

What your Diploma unlocks

The CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) is more than a qualification, it’s the credential that opens the door to your builder’s licence and senior roles right across the industry. Here’s what it gives you:

  • Builder’s licence eligibility: the Diploma is a core qualification required to apply for a builder’s licence in most Australian states and territories, including the QBCC Builder Medium Rise licence in QLD and the General Building licence in NSW
  • Take on bigger projects: become eligible to manage and contract for low and medium-rise residential and commercial building projects
  • Move off the tools: step into construction manager, site supervisor, foreperson, or contracts administrator roles with a formal qualification
  • Start your own building business: get the qualification you need to legally operate as a licensed builder and run your own company
  • Higher earning potential: nationally recognised diploma holders can get significantly higher rates and can tender for work that requires formal qualifications

Completing the Diploma through RPL means you skip unnecessary training and get straight to the credential that matters.

Yes. A CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) earned through RPL is exactly the same nationally recognised qualification as one completed through traditional study or on campus. The certificate does not state it was completed via RPL. It carries the same weight with licensing bodies, including the QBCC, Building Commission NSW, and the Victorian Building Authority, employers, and government agencies across Australia.

RPL isn’t a shortcut, it’s a formal assessment process regulated by ASQA and offered by Everthought Education as a registered training organisation (RTO 32438). What changes is the process, not the outcome. Instead of completing coursework from scratch, your existing skills and experience are assessed against the competency standards. Where gaps exist, targeted gap training fills them in.

The CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) consists of 27 units of competency, 24 core units and 3 elective units. You don’t need to have formally studied these units, you just need to be able to demonstrate competency through your work experience. Most experienced construction professionals will meet the majority through their day-to-day work.
