About this apprenticeship

A bricklaying apprenticeship gives you the skills to work across residential, commercial, and public construction projects, laying and bonding bricks and building blocks that form the structure of buildings that last for generations.

You’ll learn on real construction sites working alongside qualified tradies who’ll teach you the skills you actually need. Everthought’s trainers visit your worksite to check your progress and assess your competency, and you can complete the theory online in your own time. No classroom required.

At the end of your apprenticeship you’ll hold a CPC33020 Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying, a nationally recognised qualification respected right across the construction industry.

The CPC33020 Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying covers everything from the basics of masonry through to complex structural and decorative work. Training is delivered at your worksite by Everthought trainers with real industry experience, so what you’re learning directly applies to the work you’re doing every day.

Your training covers the practical bricklaying and blocklaying skills you’ll use every day on a construction site in Queensland or Western Australia:

  • Laying and bonding bricks and building blocks for domestic, commercial and public buildings
  • Constructing masonry veneer and cavity brick walls
  • Building masonry arches, curved walls, and decorative ornamental panels
  • Constructing steps, stairs, columns, and piers from brick and block
  • Installing flashings and damp proof course in masonry construction
  • Reading and interpreting building plans and specifications on site
  • Applying basic levelling procedures for masonry work
  • Workplace health and safety (WHS) in the construction industry
  • Construction measurements, calculations, and material estimation

The CPC33020 Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying is made up of 28 units of competency: 20 core units and 8 elective units. As an apprentice you’ll work through these progressively on the job, with your Everthought trainer assessing your competency at your worksite.

How long does Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying take to complete?

The Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying (CPC33020) typically takes 3-4 years to complete, depending on your progress. Our competency-based approach means you can complete units as you demonstrate proficiency, potentially finishing sooner.

How much will I get paid?

Apprentice wages are set by the Building and Construction General On-site Award. Your pay increases each year as you progress. It’s not a full trade wage from the start, but you are earning while you learn, which puts you well ahead of full-time study.

Can I do an apprenticeship if I've already finished school?

You’ll be qualified to work as a bricklayer, blocklayer, or paver across residential, commercial, and public construction projects. From there you can specialise, go into business for yourself, or work your way into supervisory roles.

What jobs can I get with Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying?

Qualified carpenters can work as residential or commercial carpenters, formwork carpenters, shopfitters, or cabinetmakers. You can also start your own carpentry business, work as a site supervisor, or progress to building and construction management roles.
