Is RPL right for me?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that recognises the skills and knowledge you’ve already gained through real work experience. Instead of repeating what you already know in a classroom, you’re assessed on what you can actually do on the job.

If you’ve been working as a dry plasterer or wall and ceiling liner for years but never completed a formal qualification, wall and ceiling lining RPL is likely the fastest and most practical way to get your Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining.

Need your contractor licence?

In most Australian states, a trade qualification is required before you can apply for a dry plastering or wall and ceiling lining contractor licence. In QLD, the QBCC requires your Cert III for plastering drywall work valued over $3,300. In NSW, it’s required for residential work over $5,000. Licensing requirements vary by state. RPL is the fastest way to get your Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining without going back to study.

What your Cert III unlocks

A lot of experienced dry plasterers and wall and ceiling liners get by without a formal qualification for years. But there are practical reasons why getting your Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining through RPL is worth doing:

  • Get your contractor licence: a formal trade qualification is required to apply for a dry plastering contractor licence in QLD, NSW and VIC and other states.
  • Charge more for your work: qualified tradespeople can get higher rates and win more jobs, especially on commercial fit-outs and fire-rated system installs
  • Take on bigger projects: builders and project managers often require subcontractors to hold qualifications before putting you on site
  • Start or grow your own business: a nationally recognised qualification adds credibility, opens doors, and is often required to hold public liability insurance and enter contracts

Waterproofing RPL costs less than completing a full course from scratch, and takes a fraction of the time.
