Is RPL right for me?

RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) is a formal assessment process that recognises the skills and knowledge you’ve built through real work on site. If you’ve been supervising low rise residential construction in Queensland, there’s a good chance your experience already covers what the QBCC requires.

Instead of studying content you’ve already applied on the job, RPL lets you demonstrate your competency directly and fills in any gaps along the way.

Looking to get your QBCC Site Supervisor Low Rise licence?

The QBCC requires completion of 10 specific units of competency from the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (CPC40120) before you can apply for a Site Supervisor – Low Rise licence. Through RPL, we assess your existing experience against those exact units, so if you’ve already been doing the work, you may not need to study at all.

What your qualification unlocks

The QBCC Site Supervisor Low Rise licence is the formal credential that lets you legally supervise residential construction sites in Queensland and a recognised stepping stone toward becoming a licensed builder. Here’s what it gives you:

  • Legal authority to supervise: hold a QBCC Site Supervisor – Low Rise licence and legally oversee low rise residential construction projects in Queensland
  • A clear pathway to your builder’s licence: holding a site supervisor licence is the recommended first step toward a QBCC Builder – Low Rise contractor licence
  • Formal recognition of your skills: your on-site experience gets assessed and documented against the national competency standard
  • More job opportunities: many builders and construction companies require site supervisors to hold a current QBCC licence
  • Career progression: move from tradesperson or leading hand into a formal supervisory role with the credentials to back it up

Completing the qualification through RPL means you skip unnecessary training and get straight to the credential that matters.

Yes. The Statement of Attainment issued through RPL covers the same 10 units of competency required by the QBCC for the Site Supervisor Low Rise licence assessed against the same national standard as any other delivery method.

The QBCC recognises RPL as a valid pathway to meeting the technical qualification requirement for this licence. What changes is the process, not the outcome. Rather than completing formal study from scratch, your existing skills and experience are assessed directly. Where gaps are identified, targeted training fills them in.

Frequently asked questions

If you still have questions, our team will be happy to help.

What is RPL?

RPL stands for Recognition of Prior Learning. It’s a formal assessment process that evaluates the skills and knowledge you’ve built through real work experience and matches them against the required competency standards. Where your experience covers the requirements, you don’t need to sit through additional training.

What is the QBCC Site Supervisor – Low Rise licence?

It’s a licence issued by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) that allows you to legally supervise low‑rise building work in Queensland while employed by a licensed contractor. To apply, you must hold a QBCC‑approved qualification which is delivered by RTOs as a 10‑unit skill set from the Certificate IV in Building and Construction

How long does RPL take?

Typically 2 to 8 weeks depending on your level of experience and how quickly you can pull your evidence together. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe after your eligibility chat.

What evidence do I need to provide?

Evidence can include site photos, references from licensed builders, payslips, employment contracts, or site records that demonstrate your experience. We’ll walk you through exactly what’s needed once we understand your background.

Is my Certificate IV the same as one done through traditional study?

Yes. Your CPC40120 certificate is nationally accredited and carries the same value with licensing boards, employers, and government agencies regardless of how it was completed.

Can I use this to apply for a builder's licence?

No, the Site Supervisor – Low Rise licence is not a builder’s licence. It only lets you supervise building work while working for a licensed contractor, and it does not let you sign building contracts. On its own, it won’t qualify you for a builder’s licence, but the supervision experience you gain can help you meet the experience requirements for a QBCC Builder – Low Rise licence later on.
