Is RPL right for me?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that recognises the skills you’ve built on the job, not what you’ve studied in a classroom. If you’ve been working as a tiler for years without a formal qualification, RPL is the most direct path to getting certified.

Tiling is a precision trade, and experienced tilers often have a broad skillset that spans floor and wall work, surface preparation, waterproofing, and decorative finishes. RPL recognises all of it.

Need your contractor licence?

In most Australian states and territories, a formal trade qualification is required before you can apply for a tiling contractor licence. If getting licensed is your goal, RPL is the fastest way to get the qualification you need.

What your Cert III unlocks

A lot of experienced tilers work for years without a formal qualification. But with tiling in strong demand across Australia’s residential and renovation sectors, having your credentials in order has never been more important. Here’s what your Cert III unlocks:

  • Get your contractor licence — a formal trade qualification is required to apply for a bricklaying contractor licence in most Australian states and territories
  • Charge more for your work — qualified tradespeople command higher rates and win more jobs
  • Take on bigger projects — builders and developers often require subcontractors to hold formal qualifications
  • Specialise and diversify — waterproofing, mosaic, decorative and commercial tiling all open up further with formal recognition
  • Start or grow your own business — a nationally recognised qualification adds credibility and opens doors
  • Prove what you already know — your skills are real, your qualification should reflect that

Getting qualified through RPL costs less than completing a full course from scratch, and takes a fraction of the time.

Yes. A Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling earned through RPL is exactly the same nationally recognised qualification as one earned through an apprenticeship or full course. It carries the same AQF accreditation, is issued under the same national training system, and is treated identically by employers, licensing bodies, and government agencies across Australia.

RPL isn’t a shortcut, it’s a formal assessment process regulated by ASQA. The difference is that instead of studying what you already know, you’re assessed on the skills you’ve already built.

The CPC31320 Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling is made up of 20 units of competency. You don’t need to have studied these units, you just need to be able to demonstrate competency through your work experience. Most experienced tilers will meet the majority through their day-to-day work.

Where any gaps are identified, we’ll work with you on targeted gap training rather than requiring you to complete the full course.

Frequently asked questions

If you still have questions, our team will be happy to help.

What is RPL?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process under Australia’s national training system. It allows people with real work experience to earn a nationally recognised qualification without completing a full course or apprenticeship. Your existing skills are assessed against the requirements of the qualification.

How long does tiling RPL take?

Generally a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on how quickly you can gather your evidence. It’s significantly faster than completing a full qualification from scratch.

What if I don't meet all the requirements?

If there are gaps between your existing skills and the qualification requirements, we’ll identify them during assessment and offer targeted gap training. You’ll only need to complete the specific units you’re missing, not the full course.

How much does it cost?

RPL is generally more cost-effective than completing a full qualification from scratch. Funding may also be available depending on your state and circumstances. Get in touch and we’ll talk through the options.

I've been self-employed, can I still apply?

Yes. Evidence from self-employed work, contractor work, and family business work all counts. The key is being able to demonstrate your skills and experience with some form of evidence.

Got the experience? Let's get you qualified
