Already a carpenter? Get your Cert III through RPL
You’ve put in the years, now get the qualification to prove it. If you’ve been working as a carpenter for 3+ years, RPL turns that experience into a nationally recognised Cert III. No apprenticeship. No classroom.
Is RPL right for me?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that recognises the skills and knowledge you’ve already gained through real work experience. Instead of repeating what you already know in a classroom, you’re assessed on what you can actually do on the job.
If you’ve been working in carpentry for years but never completed a formal qualification, RPL is likely the fastest and most practical way to get certified.
Need your contractor licence?
In most Australian states and territories, a formal trade qualification is required before you can apply for a carpentry contractor licence. If getting licensed is your goal, RPL is the fastest way to get the qualification you need, without going back to study.
What your Cert III unlocks
A lot of experienced carpenters get by without a formal qualification for years. But there are practical reasons why getting qualified through RPL is worth doing:
- Get your contractor licence — a formal trade qualification is required to apply for a carpentry contractor licence in most Australian states and territories
- Charge more for your work — qualified tradespeople command higher rates and win more jobs
- Take on bigger projects — commercial builders and project managers often require subcontractors to hold formal qualifications
- Start or grow your own business — a nationally recognised qualification adds credibility and opens doors
- Prove what you already know — your skills are real, your qualification should reflect that
Getting qualified through RPL costs less than completing a full course from scratch, and takes a fraction of the time.
Is RPL a real qualification?
Yes. A Certificate III in Carpentry earned through RPL is exactly the same nationally recognised qualification as one earned through an apprenticeship or full course. It carries the same AQF accreditation, is issued under the same national training system, and is treated identically by employers, licensing bodies, and government agencies across Australia.
RPL isn’t a shortcut, it’s a formal assessment process regulated by ASQA. The difference is that instead of studying what you already know, you’re assessed on the skills you’ve already built.
Units
The CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry is made up of 34 units of competency. You don’t need to have studied these units, you just need to be able to demonstrate competency through your work experience. Most experienced carpenters will meet the majority through their day-to-day work.
Where any gaps are identified, we’ll work with you on targeted gap training rather than requiring you to complete the full course.
