A trade qualification provides and promotes quality educational outcomes for school leavers, tradies, and even those seeking greater opportunities within the building and construction industry. It serves as a formal certification that can be put towards getting a builder’s licence and gaining the necessary building trade qualifications to work on larger projects.

With the many different university courses and registered training organisations (RTOs) present in Australia, it might be overwhelming to find the right institution that can help and guide you towards different certificate levels and occupational programs.

Established in 2011, Everthought is a collective group of builders and certified educators who are passionate about seeing growth and exceptional competency within our community. We’re committed to creating employment and certification pathways for our students through our building and construction courses.

Not only are we recognised as an RTO under the Australian government, but we also offer our students trade courses and trade certificates that are offered in the learning medium of your choosing. You can opt to enrol in blended or online construction courses, allowing you to manage your schedule and complete your certificate or diploma from the comfort of your own home!

Additionally, we have an excellent recognition of prior learning (RPL) program, where we can help you turn your trade licence and work experience into a formal qualification through an RPL assessment. Our professional assessors are ready to help you determine if you are eligible and become a better builder.

What are trade qualifications?

Trade qualifications are essentially a certification you achieve that showcases that you’ve met the minimum standards of a certain practice in a given trade. These are generally determined by regulatory organisations, and these qualifications may be required to work in certain fields and projects.

The standards and learning objectives of each trade qualification are unique, and they may each have different requirements. For example, for a builder’s course, you need to display the theoretical knowledge needed for the workplace, as well as demonstrate your practical skills through an apprenticeship.

These specific objectives are designed to ensure that you receive the right amount of training and practice to work safely and appropriately. In our trade qualification program, you learn all types of things such as how to manage a workplace and even skills that can help you specialise such as carpentry or painting.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that certain trade qualifications or dual diplomas are necessary if you’re looking to get licensed by your local authority. For example, in most states in Australia, it’s a common requirement that you need to have fulfilled a Certificate IV in Building and Construction (CPC40110) and Diploma in Building and Construction (CPC50220) to be able to apply for a licence.

Do trade qualifications expire?

Trade qualifications don’t expire, and they’re considered a lifelong investment as you learn skills that remain valid forever. However, for licensing and certain accreditation purposes, there is generally a time frame associated with how long your trade qualification can transfer.

For transfer of credit purposes, there are certain universities and educational institutions that do have a five- to ten-year timeframe where your credit is most valid. However, do keep in mind that there are also institutions that don’t hold this requirement, meaning that the things you studied can still be carried over.

Continuing professional development is required as a condition of renewing a licence for those in the building and construction industry. It’s important to note that this isn’t a part of your trade qualification but the knowledge and skills you need to have to remain up-to-date as a certified professional builder.

For more information regarding the validity and expiry of your trade qualifications, we strongly recommend consulting with your local authorisation body.
