What is a construction apprenticeship?

A construction apprenticeship is a way to learn a trade while working a real job. You sign a training contract with an employer, get paid from day one, and work towards a nationally recognised Certificate III qualification. Most construction apprenticeships take 3 to 4 years to complete. Your training is delivered on the job, with Everthought trainers visiting your worksite and theory you can complete online in your own time.

What's the difference between an apprenticeship and a traineeship?

Both are paid training arrangements where you work and study at the same time. The main difference is length. Apprenticeships typically run 3 to 4 years and cover trades like carpentry, bricklaying, tiling, painting, and wall and ceiling lining. Traineeships are shorter, usually 1 to 2 years, and apply to qualifications like concreting and construction waterproofing. Both lead to a nationally recognised qualification and may be eligible for government financial support.

Do I need to find my own employer?

No. Many people who enquire with us don’t have an employer yet and that’s fine. Everthought can connect you with businesses in our employer network who are looking for apprentices. We’ll work to match you with a company that suits your trade, location, and situation. If you’re already working for a construction business and want to formalise your training, we can help with that too.

How much will I get paid?

Apprentice wages are set by the Building and Construction General On-site Award and increase each year as you progress. As a rough guide, a first-year apprentice who has completed Year 12 starts on around 60 to 65% of the full trade rate. By your third and fourth year, you’ll be earning 80 to 95% of the trade rate. Many employers pay above the Award minimum. Use the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Pay and Conditions Tool to get specific rates for your trade and situation.

Which states do you offer apprenticeships in?

Everthought offers construction apprenticeships and traineeships across Queensland, Western Australia, and New South Wales. Not all trades are available in every state. Check the individual trade pages for details on where each qualification is offered.

What government support is available?

The Australian Government offers financial support to eligible apprentices in priority trade occupations, which includes most construction trades. Support can include the Australian Apprenticeship Support Loan (AASL) to help with everyday costs, as well as the Australian Apprentice Training Support Payment (AATSP) for apprentices starting in eligible occupations.

The amount you can access and whether you qualify depends on your trade, qualification level, and personal circumstances. Government programs and rates also change from time to time, so it’s worth checking what’s current when you’re ready to start.
